The MTD IT challenge is operational, not technical

The MTD IT challenge is operational, not technical

By 2028, an estimated 2.9 million taxpayers will be mandated by MTD IT to submit quarterly updates on their income sources. That shift turns an annual cycle into a quarterly cadence, creating a 4x increase in deadlines for every client income source.

For practices, the hard part isn’t submitting a quarterly update –  the HMRC beta has proven that. It’s running the repeating operational loop behind each quarter: data collection, bookkeeping completion, checks and client outreach to close gaps.

More deadlines increases the risk for penalties, which ultimately catalyse client churn, even when the underlying cause sits with the client, not the practice.

Taken together, MTD IT is a capacity and coordination problem. To keep services affordable for clients and sustainable for practices, the work stream has to be run efficiently, quarter after quarter.

What we’ve built: a workload view designed for quarterly reality

That’s why we developed the MTD IT Obligations dashboard within Solo, our MTD software. A single, practice-wide view of MTD IT obligations across clients and income sources, designed to answer a daily question: what needs doing next, and who owns it?

A clear, current view of what matters

The dashboard lists each client’s obligations across their income sources, ordered by operational risk: overdue first, then what’s due next. When a quarter ends, completed items drop off so the view stays focused on work that still needs attention.

Allocation that matches how practices actually operate

Teams can filter quickly by status or search by client and income source. Advanced filters support real operating models – account manager, practice location, and practice code – so work can be split and managed along the same lines teams already use day-to-day.

Visibility for managers, focus for teams

Permissions follow existing access rules: admins can see the full workstream, while standard users see only assigned clients. Managers can support and track progress without pulling everyone into the same queue, and team members can stay focused on what they own.

From triage to action, fast

From the dashboard you can drill into a summary client view of quarterly submissions across income sources, or jump straight into a specific obligation to begin checks and preparation for the update.

This zoomed-out view across MTD IT client deadlines helps practices maintain operational continuity by spending less time figuring out what’s due, prioritising the right work earlier, and allocating effort in a way that reduces last-minute pressure on teams.
